Famous Dave’s Rib Rub, Minnetonka, Minnesota

I found Famous Dave’s Rib Rub at Festival when I was in Marshfield.

I knew Famous Dave’s is a more midwestern BBQ chain and I had eaten there a few times when I lived in Madison. I’ve obviously eaten a lot more BBQ in Texas since I moved to Austin, so I’d be trying this from a new perspective.

This seasoning is very sweet and smokey. In a way, you can almost call it smoked sugar with a few extra spices. This kind of stuff would not be a staple of Texas. It’s too sweet. The first ingredient listed is sugar! This kind of stuff would be found east of Texas in the Deep South.

With the sweetness also comes a smoky flavor. There is just as strong of a smoke flavor as sweet flavor. Combined, these two flavors go perfectly with each other. It’s something different and refreshing from what I’d eat in Texas.

Besides being Deep Southern-influenced, you can tell it’s Midwestern influenced. Famous Dave’s was founded in Northern Wisconsin and now is based out of Minnesota. In these areas, people’s tolerance for spice is much lower. Most foods are intentionally less spicy. This is the case with this seasoning. There’s a hint of spice, but the main flavors lie in the sweet and smokiness.

I’ve been eating this spice for a while, and it’s grown on me. Victoria also really likes it. I first tried it on a pork chop and then some rice and vegetables. It was great on that pork chop. I guess they aren’t lying on the package!

So if you’re looking for something that’s sweet and smoky, but not too spicy, this is your seasoning! Also on the package it says, “I use it on everything.” I can believe them. You can throw it on everything, and it’ll pack that nice smoky sweetness.

So what are you waiting for? Give it a try!

Once you’re done sprinkling it on everything you think of, come back here and let me know what you think!
